In his books, V.I.Vernadsky (1863 -1945) provided an interdisciplinary analysis of broad factual data, which became a significant contribution to science. Moreover, those interdisciplinary books became a useful contribution to education in various areas of sciences on environment and natural resources. The example of his books illustrates that modernizing contemporary education requires interdisciplinary approaches. To apply those approaches, interdisciplinary scientific monographs may become especially useful. Examples of that are many. Among those examples, it is worthwhile to analyze how some monographs in specific areas of ecological sciences became a part of educational material in teaching a variety of courses.

Scientific monographs often serve additional function as teaching aids. The goal of this publication is to analyze some specific examples of educational use of scientific monographs in the important area of modern ecological science. This area of science is relevant to the new discipline of biochemical ecology [1, 2].

In 1986, the book ‘Introduction to Biochemical Ecology’ [1] was published. The book was translated into Polish language [11], and also into Bulgarian language. In this book, new fundamental concepts of ecology were developed. In the book, the new concepts and terms ‘ecological chemomediators’ and ‘ecological chemoregulators’ were proposed and illustrated. Those concepts help deeper analyze the ecological role of many chemicals produced by organisms. Later, the presentation of those concepts and terms was repeated in another book, ‘Introduction to Problems of Biochemical Ecology’ [2].

The innovative components in the books, and other features of the book that were useful in education [1, 2]:

the first generalization on ecological functions of secondary metabolites;

the first books where a very broad data on chemical interactions among organisms were put in system; the data covered bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, algae, higher plants, animals;

the first list of biospheric functions of natural chemicals, with their role as regulators of interactions among organisms;

the first time the useful terms were suggested: ecological chemomediators and ecological chemoregualtors;

the boad data on transformation of chemicals (xenobiotics, pollutants) in organisms were put into a clear system;

In addition, the books on conservation of biodiversity [3-5] were published. In those books, a new scientific approach was used in order to classify and to put into a system the diverse factual data on the contemporary man-made impact on the biosphere. This approach was the analysis according the levels of organization of life systems.

The books [1-5] provided new scientifically innovative ways to organize and put into a logical and modern system a massive body of factual information. The goal of this publication is to provide some information on how those books have been used in educating students in ecology and other academic disciplines. The relevant data are given in Tables 1 and 2.

Besides the abovementioned books, there are other monographs in those areas, which also proved to be usuful in education (e.g., [6] and others).

The data of the tables 1-2 demonstrated that the new scientific knowledge, innovative concepts and approaches in organizing factual data that were presented in the books [1-5] were accepted and used in the education of students in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Georgia. It was used also in other countries – e.g. in Czech Republic. According to a visiting scientist from Czech Republic, a Czech edition [7] is used, e.g., in University of South Bohemia.

It is interesting to look at the variety of the lecture courses that use the abovementioned books:

Basics xenobiology; Biological diversity of organisms; Chemical Ecology; Chemical interactions in nature; Earth Studies; Ecobiotechnology; Ecological Biochemistry; Ecology of mammals; Ecology; Environmental assessment of landscapes; Environmental Economics; Environmental protection; Environmental safety and security; Environmental Toxicology; Fundamentals of sensory ecology and videoekology; Hybrid methods to control the environment; Introduction to biochemistry; Introduction to the biochemical environment; Low Molecular Weight Bioregulators; Modern biology; Nature Studies; Physical and chemical basis of environmental protection; Phytomonitoring and protection of flora; Protection of biodiversity of animals; Protection and ways of reproduction of rare species.

The very list of those courses (which includes both traditional and recently developed disciplines) demonstrate a broad applicability of the interdisciplinary monographs.

The books mentioned above as well as [6] could be used in developing education in a relatively new area of ecological (environmental) safety and security. This interdisciplinary subject could be taught to students as well as graduate students. It could be a useful contribution to programs for education of Bachelors and Masters.

It is possible that those interdisciplinary books [1-6] will be useful in other educational institutions.
